Models of some ethical theories and their practical applications (media as a model)
A comparative analytical study in the philosophy of professional ethics
The study deals with models of some ethical theories and their practical applications (media as a model), where it aimed to identify the ethics of the media profession through the extent to which media professionals are related to professional ethics and their adherence to it so that the media and its means are of the required level. The study also sought to apply some ethical theories to the media profession and the implications and negative consequences of its violation of the profession's ethics.
The study relied on the analytical and comparative method by applying some theories in the field of media in order to identify the extent of the media's need for ethics. Through which we clarified the similarities and differences between the media, where the media ethics has become one of the most serious issues facing the entire world.
In recent years the media has spread widely, and it has become the main common thing in our lives, where we are used to following its means on a daily basis and to follow the events and materials showed up by watching and listening. This necessitates the need to emphasize the importance of adhering to ethics and combating unethical practices. The study showed that the media is stronger than any modern weapons, due to the misleading and practice of lies used by some media to gain the sympathy of public opinion or promote some products and influence the consumer, for example. This generated a great desire to the researcher to study the subject due to its novelty and its connection to reality, and to demonstrate the seriousness of the media through some practices that contradict the rules of professional contact.
As this study is a philosophical in principle, we sought through it to employ three philosophical theories, namely, virtue, duty, and utility in the field of media. We analyzed some of the immoral models in light of these theories. This proved to us the importance of these theories in the applied field in business and professions, in line with what has been termed as practical ethics, as it became clear that many media violate the ethics of the profession.
The study discusses the most important effects that result from violating the ethics of the media profession. It is imperative that the media adhere to the ethics of the profession in order to fully succeed in achieving its mission and for the benefit of the profession and society alike.
The study concluded the following results:
1- The results of the study showed that practical ethics appeared at a relatively late stage and had a great role in analyzing controversial issues that emerged from certain professions such as media, medicine, law, ..etc . Practial ethics benefited from theories in analyzing issues and reaching solutions to the problems encountered. We have relied in this study on examples from these theories, namely; Aristotle's theory of virtue, Kant's theory of duty, as well as the utility theory of Bentam and Mill, which has proven its relevance to reality when employed for service thereof. This confirms that moral values and moral philosophy should not be viewed as having nothing to do with reality. Therefore, the reason for the delay in the emergence of practical ethics is that it is the product of specific circumstances, such as scientific discoveries, the technological revolution and the applications of some sciences that have undermined moral values. This forced philosophers to search for a method to curb these developments and their negative effects.
2- The results of the study revealed that goal of professional ethics is to create an ethical conscience that helps the professional to carry out the burdens of his profession with accuracy, honesty and honor. In addition, the professional's adherence to these ethics would lead to the development of the performance and skills, as adherence to the ethics of the profession leads to his/her focus on developing himself/herself instead of seeking benefits and falling into the circle of corruption.
3- The results of the study showed the importance of ethics in the field of professions, business and combating the negative phenomena that exist in the professions, due to their distancing from moral values and the pursuit of personal benefits without regard to public interest.
4- The results of the study showed that professional ethics is an integrated set of laws represented in conscience, religious motives, charters, moral laws and man-made laws with disciplinary rules.
5- The results of the study showed that business ethics is knowing what is right and wrong in providing a service or product, and that ethical behavior in the field of business reflects the reflects the professional ethical practice.
6- The results of the study showed that the media profession (like other professions) has rules, behavior and etiquette that are specific to it and distinguish it from others. In their entirety, they are principles that represent moral values that are ideal standards for professional behavior, and a set of rules represent the behavioral characteristics that a professional must display when practicing business and when dealing with colleagues and others.
7- Considering the media profession as an integrative societal profession, as it is a profession whose role in society cannot be separated from the role played by other professions in it. | en_US |
